REACH – challenges for a downstream user (DU) formulator – how to handle incoming substance exposure scenarios and create product exposure scenarios (ES)?

Anne Lill Gade, Jotun AS, Norway

The handling of ES will be some of the most challenging worktasks of a DU formulator (the position of a paint manufacturer) under REACH. To understand and prepare for these worktasks a deep understanding of the ES process is required. The handling of ES can be divided in 4 major work tasks.

1) The first registration deadline in REACH is 01.12.2010. If the DU wants to ensure that the DU uses are assessed and included in the exposure scenarios he need to inform the substance supplier within 1 year before the registration date. This requires data collection and communication in the supply chain.

2) When the ES starts to come to the DU, the information need to be standardised and transferred to databases to be able to handle.

3) The uses of the DU formulator and his customers need to be checked to see if they are inside or outside the received ES.

4) ES for the products (preparations) need to be developed in a standardised way, be included in the eSDS and translated to the European languages.

The presentation will describe these processes and prerequisites.
