A formulation approach to TiO2 stabilisation in architectural and industrial paints and coatings

Wim Stout and Roger Reinartz, Air Products Nederlands BV, Nederland

Titanium Di Oxide (TiO2) is the most important inorganic pigment in the paint and coatings industry. Different TiO2 grades may vary significantly in properties, influencing strongly the choice of dispersant technology. TiO2 is often ground using dissolver techniques in architectural paints, while dissolver and pearl mill techniques are used in industrial paint manufacture. Various TiO2 grades were tested in architectural and industrial paint formulations, using different dispersant technologies. This paper presents a logical approach for TiO2 stabilisation in these demanding and challenging markets.
