Carbon nano tube (CNT) modified binder systems as development platform for unique new coating systems.

Eng. Stein Dietrichson and R&D-manager Paal Skybak, Advanced Marine Coatings AS (AMC), Norway

Well dispersed multi walled CNT (carbon nano tubes) in liquid polymers create the backbone in a development of nanomodified marine coatings, which was initiated by the authors, Mr. Skybak and Mr Dietrichson in 2006. The process is based on a unique patented method to separate the CNT-agglomerates in to single tubes and obtain covalent bonds between the tubes and liquid polymer molecules. The sales and production company, Advanced Marine Coatings AS (AMC), has obtained exclusive rights to utilise this technology for marine coatings world wide. The CNT-modification is working as a reinforcement of the paint film as well as a UV-absorber. In addition the flow- and curing properties of the system is improved considerably.

AMC has at present 8 different epoxy systems for different applications under development, of which some also will contain additional nano technology and polymer additives to obtain better hydrophobic properties, improved scratch resistance and longer term anti fouling properties. The sister company of AMC, Re-Turn AS, is doing the practical development work and also participating in the EU 7-programme multiprotect MUST (http://www.sintef.no/Projectweb/MUST ), where nano container technology in practical use is under development.
