Good film formation is essential to good coating properties. How to get it with acrylic dispersions?

The importance of film formation for coatings properties like aspect, chemical resistance, durability, adhesion… has already been extensively discussed. However the conditions for an optimised film formation are not always well identified and can depend on lots of factors. The mechanism of film formation of different acrylic dispersions, homogeneous and core-shell, as well as the film properties will be described under different conditions of application.
The most common way to adjust the film formation of a paint is to add co-solvants. These co-solvants, depending on the chemical composition and structure of the acrylic dispersion, may generate adverse effects in terms of final applicative properties of the coating. A comprehensive study on how to optimise the choice and amount of coalescing agents in homogeneous and core shell acrylic dispersions will be presented.
